EPA-registered insect repellent on skin (DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus)
Permethrin-treated clothes and gear — never apply permethrin to skin
Fine-tipped tweezers for tick removal
Headlamp — many snakes and scorpions are nocturnal
Shake out boots, sleeping bags, and clothing in scorpion and spider country
Stay on trail; watch where you put hands and feet, especially around rocks and woodpiles
Bear-safe food storage; never leave snacks in a tent in bear country
Bear spray on your belt (not in a pack) in grizzly range
Extra water and a way to treat more — heat multiplies every other risk
Leash pets; they find rattlesnakes, ticks, and alligators first
Full-body tick check after the hike, including hairline, waist, and behind knees
If you have a known sting allergy, carry epinephrine and tell your group where it is
